Staghorn Fern ‘Nicky’

Staghorn Fern 'Nicky' (Platycerium bifurcatum 'Nicky')

SKU: 6936

🌿 The Staghorn Fern 'Nicky', scientifically known as Platycerium bifurcatum 'Nicky', is a compact cultivar of the classic staghorn fern from the Polypodiaceae family. Native to the rainforests of Australia and Southeast Asia, this epiphytic fern naturally grows on tree trunks and branches, drawing moisture and nutrients from the air and organic debris. The 'Nicky' variety is prized for its manageable size, making it perfect for smaller spaces while still delivering that dramatic, architectural look. This is an intermediate-level plant that rewards patience with stunning growth. Fun fact: staghorn ferns produce two types of fronds—shield fronds that attach to surfaces and antler-like fronds that give the plant its iconic appearance.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

The 'Nicky' cultivar features the characteristic bifurcated fronds that resemble deer or elk antlers, though in a more compact form than standard staghorns. The fertile fronds are grey-green with a soft, felty texture due to fine white hairs that help the plant retain moisture. Shield fronds grow flat against the mounting surface, starting green and gradually turning brown and papery as they age—this is completely normal and helps anchor the plant. The overall growth habit is upright to slightly cascading, creating a sculptural presence wherever it's displayed.

FLOWER DETAILS

Staghorn ferns don't produce traditional flowers. Instead, they reproduce through spores that develop on the undersides of the fertile fronds in brownish patches. While not colourful or fragrant, these spore patches add textural interest and are a sign of a healthy, mature plant. The appeal of this fern lies entirely in its stunning foliage architecture rather than blooms. Spore production happens naturally when the plant reaches maturity and environmental conditions are right, typically requiring consistent humidity and adequate light.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. East or north-facing windows work well. Avoid direct sun which can scorch the fronds. Needs about 6-8 hours of filtered light daily.
  • 💧 Water: Water when the shield fronds feel slightly dry. In summer, soak or mist 2-3 times per week. In winter, reduce to once weekly. Dunking the entire mount in water for 10-20 minutes works best, or water from above if potted.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity. Thrives in bathrooms or near humidifiers. Can tolerate average home humidity with regular misting.
  • 🪴 Soil: Epiphytic—grows mounted on wood, cork, or in very chunky, well-draining orchid bark mix. Avoid regular potting soil which retains too much moisture.
  • 🏺 Potting: Best mounted on wood plaques or hung in slatted baskets. If potted, use shallow containers with excellent drainage. Repot or remount every 2-3 years when shield fronds overgrow the base.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate. Produces 2-4 new fronds per year. Reaches 30-45 cm width in 2-3 years. Maximum size around 50-60 cm for 'Nicky', making it smaller than standard staghorns.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted liquid fertilizer (quarter strength). Use balanced or fern-specific formulas. No fertilizer needed in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes, staghorn ferns are non-toxic to cats and dogs. Safe for homes with curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

The Staghorn Fern 'Nicky' makes a statement mounted on a wall in living rooms, bedrooms, or hallways where it can be appreciated as living art. It's particularly well-suited to bathrooms where natural humidity levels help it thrive. Covered porches or bright entryways also work beautifully. Avoid placing it in dark corners, near heating vents, or in spots with cold drafts from windows or doors. Keep it away from intense afternoon sun which can damage the delicate fronds.
