Stephania Kaweesakii

SKU: 6960

🌿 Meet Stephania kaweesakii, a rare tuberous vine from the Menispermaceae family that's become one of the most sought-after plants among collectors. Native to the limestone karst forests of Thailand, this unusual species grows from a woody caudex that sits partially above the soil, sending out delicate vining stems with perfectly round, peltate leaves. What makes this plant special is its slow, deliberate growth and the way its leaves seem to float on thin petioles like tiny green umbrellas. This is an intermediate-level plant that rewards patient growers with its unique sculptural form. Fun fact: the caudex stores water and nutrients, allowing the plant to survive extended dry periods by going completely dormant and losing all its leaves.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This vine produces trailing to climbing stems that can reach several feet in length under ideal conditions. The leaves are perfectly circular, ranging from 5 to 10 centimetres across, with a smooth, matte surface that feels almost waxy to the touch. Each leaf is peltate, meaning the stem attaches to the centre rather than the edge, creating an umbrella-like appearance. The foliage is a soft, muted green that contrasts beautifully with the rough, textured caudex below.

FLOWER DETAILS

In cultivation, Stephania kaweesakii rarely flowers, but when it does, the blooms are small, inconspicuous, and greenish-yellow in colour. The flowers grow in clusters and have no noticeable fragrance. They're more botanically interesting than visually striking, so this plant is grown primarily for its foliage and unique caudex rather than its flowers. Flowering typically occurs in mature specimens during the active growing season. To encourage blooming, provide bright indirect light, consistent warmth, and allow the plant to establish a strong root system over several years.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is essential. Avoid direct afternoon sun which can scorch leaves. Needs 6-8 hours of filtered light daily. Can tolerate partial shade but growth slows considerably.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly during growing season (spring to early fall) when top 5 centimetres of soil dry out. Reduce watering in winter when plant may go dormant. Water from bottom or carefully around caudex to prevent rot. Let excess drain completely.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home conditions. Appreciates occasional misting during active growth.
  • 🪴 Soil: Must be extremely well-draining. Use a mix of succulent soil, perlite, orchid bark, and coarse sand. Slightly gritty texture prevents water retention around the caudex.
  • 🏺 Potting: Shallow terracotta pots work best, allowing caudex to sit partially exposed. Pot should be only slightly larger than the caudex. Repot every 2-3 years in early spring before active growth begins.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Very slow growing. May produce 3-5 new leaves over 6 months. After one year, expect modest vine extension of 15-30 centimetres. Caudex grows slowly, reaching 8-15 centimetres diameter over many years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during growing season with diluted balanced fertilizer at half strength. Skip fertilizing during dormancy in winter months.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. This plant is toxic to cats and dogs. The caudex and leaves contain alkaloids that can cause vomiting, drooling, and digestive upset if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Place your Stephania kaweesakii on a bright windowsill with eastern or western exposure, where it receives gentle morning or late afternoon light. It looks stunning on plant shelves or side tables where the caudex can be displayed and the vines allowed to trail naturally. A bathroom with a window provides ideal humidity, or place it in a living room with other humidity-loving plants. Avoid dark corners, north-facing windows with insufficient light, or spots near heating vents that create dry air. Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.
