String of Spades 7504

SKU: 7504

🌿 The String of Spades, scientifically known as Ceropegia woodii subsp. woodii (often confused with its close relative Ceropegia linearis subsp. woodii), belongs to the Apocynaceae family and originates from southern Africa, particularly South Africa, Eswatini, and Zimbabwe. In its natural habitat, this trailing succulent drapes over rocky outcrops and sparse vegetation, thriving in semi-arid conditions. It's a beginner-friendly plant that tolerates neglect better than overcare, making it perfect for those new to houseplants. Fun fact: the tuberous roots that form along its stems can be planted to propagate new plants, and these tubers were historically used as a food source by indigenous peoples during times of scarcity.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This is a cascading, trailing plant with delicate vining stems that can reach several feet in length, making it ideal for hanging baskets or high shelves. The leaves are small, thick, and distinctly spade-shaped (hence the common name), arranged in pairs along thin, wiry purple stems. Each leaf displays a muted grey-green colour on top with subtle silvery variegation and a purple underside that adds visual interest. The foliage has a smooth, waxy texture that helps the plant retain moisture during dry periods.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers are tubular and unusual, with a bulbous base tapering to a narrow opening, coloured in shades of pale pink to mauve with darker purple markings. They're small but fascinating up close, resembling tiny lanterns hanging from the stems, and have no noticeable fragrance. While not the main attraction of this plant, the flowers appear sporadically throughout the growing season, typically spring through early fall. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, allow the soil to dry between waterings, and maintain slightly cooler temperatures (around 15-18°C) during winter months to mimic the plant's natural dormancy period.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, though it tolerates partial shade. Needs about 4-6 hours of filtered light daily. Can handle some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays.
  • 💧 Water: Water sparingly. During spring and summer, water when soil is completely dry (every 2-3 weeks). In fall and winter, reduce to once monthly. Water at the base rather than overhead to prevent rot.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Average home humidity of 30-50% is perfect. No misting needed—this plant prefers drier air.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining succulent or cactus mix. Add perlite or coarse sand to regular potting soil for better drainage.
  • 🏺 Potting: Shallow pot with drainage holes, terracotta preferred. Repot every 2-3 years in spring only when rootbound.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to fast. Vines grow 6-12 inches over 6 months, 1-2 feet per year. Mature vines can reach 6-10 feet in ideal conditions.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted (half-strength) liquid succulent fertilizer. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Toxic to cats and dogs. Contains cardiac glycosides that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and heart arrhythmias if ingested. Keep out of reach of curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This plant looks stunning in hanging planters or on high shelves where its trailing vines can cascade freely, making it perfect for living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices with decent natural light. It works well on plant stands near east or west-facing windows where it receives bright but filtered morning or evening sun. The bathroom is generally not ideal unless you have a bright, well-ventilated space, as it prefers drier conditions. Avoid placing it in dark corners, windowless rooms, or areas with heavy foot traffic where the delicate vines might get damaged. Keep away from heating vents and cold drafts near doors or windows during winter.
