String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus) 7502

🌿 The String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus) is a trailing succulent from the Asteraceae family, native to the dry regions of southwest Africa. In its natural habitat, it grows along the ground, using its pearl-like leaves to store water during long droughts. This plant is considered beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for those new to succulents or anyone wanting a low-maintenance hanging plant. Fun fact: each "pearl" has a small translucent window at its tip that allows light to reach the inside of the leaf for photosynthesis.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This succulent has a distinctive trailing growth habit, with thin stems that can cascade several feet when mature. The leaves are small, spherical beads that resemble green peas or pearls, typically around 6mm in diameter. Each pearl is smooth and glossy with a soft green colour that can develop slight purple tones in bright light. The texture is firm yet slightly squishy when gently pressed, indicating good hydration.

FLOWER DETAILS

String of Pearls produces small, white to cream-coloured flowers that look like tiny fluffy pompoms or dandelion seeds. The blooms have a sweet, cinnamon-like fragrance that's surprisingly strong for such small flowers. While the plant's main appeal is its unique foliage, the occasional flowering adds a delicate charm. Flowers typically appear in late spring or summer when the plant is mature and happy. To encourage blooming, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to experience slightly cooler temperatures in winter (around 10-15°C), and ensure it gets a rest period with reduced watering.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is best, though it can tolerate some direct morning sun. Needs about 6-8 hours of good light daily. Too much harsh sun will scorch the pearls.
  • 💧 Water: Water deeply but infrequently. In spring and summer, water when pearls start to look slightly wrinkled or feel soft (every 1-2 weeks). In fall and winter, reduce to once every 3-4 weeks. Bottom watering works well to avoid rot.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers low humidity, around 30-40%. Tolerates average home conditions but avoid humid bathrooms or kitchens.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Add extra perlite or coarse sand if needed to improve drainage.
  • 🏺 Potting: Shallow pots with drainage holes work best. Use terracotta or unglazed clay to wick away excess moisture. Repot every 2-3 years or when rootbound, typically in spring.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to fast. Can grow 6-12 inches in the first year under good conditions. Mature plants can trail 2-3 feet or more.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted cactus fertilizer at half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. String of Pearls is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, causing vomiting, drooling, and lethargy due to toxic compounds in the sap.

WHERE TO PUT IT

String of Pearls looks stunning in hanging baskets or on high shelves where the strands can cascade freely. It works beautifully in bright living rooms, home offices, or sunrooms near east or west-facing windows. A bathroom windowsill with good light is fine as long as humidity isn't excessive. Avoid placing it in dark corners, dimly lit hallways, or directly on windowsills that get intense afternoon sun. Keep it away from floor level if you have curious pets.
