ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

SKU: 6909

ðŸŒŋ The ZZ plant, scientifically known as Zamioculcas zamiifolia, belongs to the Araceae family and hails from the drought-prone regions of eastern Africa, particularly Kenya and Tanzania. In its natural habitat, this hardy plant thrives in rocky, arid conditions where water is scarce and light is filtered through tree canopies. It's an absolute beginner-friendly choice, forgiving almost every mistake you throw at it. Here's something fascinating: the ZZ plant can go weeks without water because it stores moisture in its thick, potato-like rhizomes underground, making it nearly impossible to kill through neglect.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This plant grows in an upright, architectural habit with stems that emerge directly from the soil like glossy green wands. The leaves are pinnately compound, meaning each stem holds multiple leaflets arranged in pairs along a central rachis. Each leaflet is oval-shaped with a pointed tip, and the surface has a waxy, almost plastic-like sheen that reflects light beautifully. The colour ranges from deep emerald to nearly black-green in some varieties, and the texture is smooth and rigid to the touch.

FLOWER DETAILS

The ZZ plant does flower, though it's rare indoors and not the main attraction. When it does bloom, it produces a small, spadix-type flower similar to a peace lily's, with a cream or light brown colour and a subtle, barely noticeable fragrance. The flower emerges near the base of the plant and is more curious than showy. Flowering happens infrequently, usually only in mature plants grown in ideal conditions. To encourage blooming, provide consistent bright indirect light, maintain stable temperatures, and avoid overwatering, though most growers are perfectly content without ever seeing a flower since the foliage is the real star.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Thrives in low to bright indirect light. Can handle fluorescent office lighting or a north-facing window. Around 4-6 hours of indirect light daily is ideal, though it tolerates much less.
  • 💧 Water: Water every 2-3 weeks in spring and summer, every 3-4 weeks in autumn and winter. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Water when the top 5-7 cm of soil is bone dry. Use the soak-and-drain method, watering thoroughly until it drains from the bottom.
  • ðŸŒĄïļ Humidity: Average home humidity of 30-50% is perfect. No misting or humidifiers needed.
  • ðŸŠī Soil: Well-draining mix is essential. Use a cactus or succulent blend, or standard potting soil mixed with perlite or sand.
  • 🏚 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, preferably terracotta or ceramic. Size should be snug, about 2-5 cm wider than the root ball. Repot every 2-3 years or when roots emerge from drainage holes.
  • ðŸŒą Growth rate: Slow growing. Expect 2-3 new stems in 6 months, 4-6 in a year under good conditions. Mature height reaches 60-90 cm indoors.
  • ðŸ‘Đ‍ðŸŒū Fertilizing: Feed once in spring and once in summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer (half strength). Skip fertilizing in autumn and winter.
  • ðŸū Pet friendly: No. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that are toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, causing mouth irritation, drooling, and digestive upset.

WHERE TO PUT IT

The ZZ plant adapts to almost any room in your home. It works beautifully in living rooms on side tables or floor corners, offices with only overhead lighting, bedrooms on dressers or nightstands, and even bathrooms with small windows. It handles low-light hallways and entryways like a champ. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and cause yellowing. Keep it away from cold drafts near exterior doors in winter and away from heating vents that dry out the air excessively.
