Begonia Guide, Part 5 of 9: Rhizomatous Begonias: Iron Cross, Tiger Paw & More

1 min read

Rhizomatous begonias are grown mainly for their large, attractive foliage (University of Florida IFAS). Two stars of this group: Begonia bowerae, a miniature Mexican species whose fine leaf-edge hairs earn it the name ‘Eyelash begonia’, and Begonia masoniana ‘Iron Cross’, from southern China and northern Vietnam, which has won the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Pet owners: the ASPCA lists Begonia as toxic to dogs and cats, mostly in the underground parts (ASPCA). See our pet-safe plants guide for alternatives.
