Begonia Guide, Part 3 of 9: Rex Begonias (M–T)
Rex begonias grow from rhizomes (thick, creeping stems). The original wild Begonia rex comes from northeastern India and reached England from Assam in the 1850s; today’s “rex-cultorum” plants are a cultivated hybrid group with it in their background (UConn Extension).
Pet owners: the ASPCA lists Begonia as toxic to dogs and cats, mostly in the underground parts (ASPCA). See our pet-safe plants guide for alternatives.
